ORAL HISTORY WORKSHOP
SUMMARY:
Oral history workshops include the Veteran voices module (30 mins), an introduction to the ethics and protocols of undertaking oral history interviews (20 mins), followed by a presentation from a local returned service member or relative (40 mins). This presentation is guided by the students themselves, who will be able to ask questions and, with permission, record the speakers.
Oral history workshops allow students to formulate historical inquiry questions and undertake their own primary research. The opportunity to hear and question personal stories first hand provides further understanding of the reliability of oral histories, particularly those undertaken many years after the event. It also promotes greater understanding, recognition and appreciation of our Anzac legacy.
FOCUS QUESTIONS:
-
What memories and experiences are conveyed through oral histories?
-
How do you interpret the tone of oral history recordings and transcripts?
-
How reliable are oral histories and personal recollections as primary sources?
-

-
What are the ethics and protocols of undertaking oral history interviews?
