DECEPTION & DISGUISE
SUMMARY:
Deception & disguise investigates the design and use of ‘camouflage trees’ as observation posts on the Western Front during the First World War. Observation posts were used by both sides to watch enemy movements, to warn of approaching soldiers and to direct artillery fire. Learning about camouflage trees gives students a new and different perspective on trench warfare, and an understanding of how complex and resourceful military preparations were. This program is an introductory exercise to get students thinking creatively and analytically. Students examine primary sources such as photographs and construction plans to deduce information.
